MDCE / Home Tech Works Announces completion of Consumer-Oriented Option Packages through its Professional Installation Program

Los Angeles, CA Thursday, May 2, 2002 10AM EDT

Home Tech Works, (a joint venture of Media Concepts--Pink Sheets: MDCE, and Top Box Inc.) announced today the company has completed research, packaging, pricing and sourcing of its consumer-oriented option sales systems. The option packages represent integrated systems for structural prewire activation modules, home theater, entertainment, security, home automation and monitoring.

“A huge component of our projected sales is contingent on option sales to the homebuyer,” said Erik Vidrio, President, MDCE and CEO for the company’s joint venture, Home Tech Works. “We are very pleased that this level of work has been completed and has passed muster with our current builders. The first level of sales in tract developments will be at the R.W. Hertel & Sons Oak Hill project in South Pasadena, where 87 homes are under construction. Those homes will have our Production Prewire package in the walls, and now we can offer those homeowners well conceived, competitively priced and integrated add-on systems.”

The Home Tech Works Professional System Installation program includes manufacturer driven and proprietary company systems. The program addresses every major area of hardware available to add on to the structural prewire in place. Extensive research on the types of systems in place in the marketplace has been conducted. The company has reviewed option package programs by competitors against what is available in the marketplace from manufacturers to create the most comprehensive program of tier-priced selections. The majority of these add-on packages can be carried by the homeowners’ mortgage.

Option package systems start by adding to the Production Prewire package being offered by the builder, which is designed and installed by Home Tech Works. Structural Prewire additions for optional video, voice & data, phone, HVAC, keypad, security and multi-media port runs can be added by the homeowner prior to walls being closed.

Systems for Household Networking modules starting at $700 per package include product by industry leaders, including Open House, OnQ and US Tec. Security concerns are addressed by option packages featuring manufacturers such as Paradox and Amseco. These systems start at $800 and move to over $1600. A key offering is home automation systems that offer security and fire protection, energy conservation and temperature control, lighting and other household operations. Home Tech Works is trained in and offering one of the industry’s most stable products, the OMNI system by HAI. OMNI offers systems governed by the size of the home and starting at $1000.

The company has strong vendor offerings in home theater and entertainment, and thus option packages in this major segment are strong. Prewire systems place audio zones and surround sound throughout the home and represent upgrade packages for the homeowner. Next, in-wall speaker systems can be added. The custom market for sound systems is addressed with a Platinum system. Home Tech Works has then created a series of very attractive surround sound speaker systems starting at the Gold level at over $5000 per system, moving to Silver and Bronze systems offering sound throughout the home at various price points. All these systems bring top named manufacturers of 5.1-surround sound technology into the home through competitive pricing. Home entertainment and theater consumer electronics products offered by the company include name brand components, all of which Erik Vidrio as head designer and audio/video expert has worked with successfully in the past.

Additional systems offered by the Home Tech Works Professional Installation program include Panasonic telephone systems, popular in large custom homes and now appropriate for tract homes over 3000 square feet. This offering is particularly suitable to fill the needs of the growing segment of the market that works from home and/or conducts a business out of their residence.

To support the Home Tech Works Professional Installation program, company staff have completed a range of product training and certification programs offered by manufacturers. Product sourcing and consumer credit card processing has been set up internally as well.

“The significance of this program to our bottom line cannot be overstated,” said Glenna Wiseman, company president. “Months of research in the field through evaluating competitive programs in a bid situation and product pricing have come together in an option program geared toward the demographics we see in the marketplace. To get an idea of the level of this impact we can look at the projections of our current project in South Pasadena. The initial contract is for 87 homes prewired with our Production prewire package at $1200 per unit. Option packages for home theater, entertainment, security, systems modules, monitoring and automation and lighting range from $700 to $15,000. So as an example, this job looks at an average per unit option sale on the conservative side of $5000, which generates close to $500K in potential revenue,” concluded Wiseman. “As we implement this same program tailored to the needs and marketing of each individual builder project, we will see greater levels of gross profit with streamlined efficiencies of scale, both on the consumer sell side and the product sourcing and pricing side.”
